My IBM T42 laptop doesn't have sounds whenever I play music, video, etc.

Is there an application or sound device that I have to download or install in my laptop?

First, make sure if your system is muted.
See if your device manager shows any device that isn't working properly( you can see a yellow ? mark) . If you find any Uninstall the device first, shut down your system and reboot your system when rebooting will install the device by itself and  display message when done.

If you are still facing an issue go to Start >>Control Panel. Go to Audio controller. If you cannot find this then all you need to do is download these drivers. Your system manufacturer can help you on this. Go to their site and download and install the same.

Alternatively you can do this:
Go to  Start >> Control Panel >>System >> Device manager. Now find Audio device and uninstall the same. Then click on file and scan for new hardware.

If you still have problems, it can be the issue with your speaker hardware.  Try and connect external speakers and see if they work.

Normally, when you buy a laptop, not all things are installed. It is usually only the operating system and graphics adapter that are installed so the customers can see that the laptop is working. Sometimes the audio card or the soundcard is not installed. You have to install it manually with the laptop’s setup CD. To check if the machine’s soundcard is installed or not, on your screen, right-click My Computer and select Properties.

Select Hardware tab then click Device Manager. Check if you see any yellow question mark related to your soundcard. If there is, insert your laptop’s setup CD. The CD is usually automated so you can install the devices easily. Find the driver for your soundcard then install it. Restart your computer when you are prompted. In case the driver on the CD is not compatible with your soundcard or it is a different driver for another soundcard, visit the laptop manufacturer’s website.

If you are using a Dell laptop, visit Dell Support by Product. Select “Product support” then enter your laptop’s Service Tag. If you don’t know your machine’s Service Tag, just click on the Detect Product button located in “Auto-detect your product” section. If you choose to auto-detect your machine, you need to download a file from their website. If you select to enter your Service Tag or Express Service Code, you will go directly to your laptop’s page.

Download the driver for your soundcard and install it on your machine. Your sound problem will be fixed after that. If you know what soundcard is built-in to your machine, visit the soundcard manufacturer’s website. For Realtek soundcard, visit Realtek Downloads.
