STOP: C0000218 {Registry File Failure} BSOD error

Today, one of my XP laptop is having a reboot loop. After disabling automatic reboot if an error occurs (done by pressing F8 after BIOS POST) it gave me this error:

STOP: C0000218 {Registry File Failure}
The registry cannot load the hive (file):

• SystemRootSystem32ConfigSOFTWARE

Or its log or alternate.
It is corrupt, absent, or not writable.

I tried using CHKDSK to check for errors on C partition but it still gives me this error. Any suggestions on how to fix this error would be much appreciated.

Hi, 

• This is not a big problem. You just have to do something very simple for solve this problem.
• Your first option is if you can burn a .iso file to a CD then do it quickly. May be it can load the recovery console for recovery.
• You can download this recovery console from many websites. Here are some:
• http://www.thecomputerparamedic.com/files/rc.iso
• https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/270018/create-bootable-recovery-console-cd/
• Also you may need to enter BIOS setup. Here select CD ROM as your first boot device if it is not.
• Also, when you running the recovery console, try to recover first. Then try to repair. Then restart your computer.

Hi Angelo_M,

• Since the computer is in reboot loop and could not boot into any options like safe, safe mode with command prompt. We definitely need windows XP cd.
• Boot from Windows XP cd and get into recovery console and follow the Microsoft KB article 307545 completely https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/307545/how-to-recover-from-a-corrupted-registry-that-prevents-windows-xp-from
• If that fails perform a repair installation of windows XP.
• Follow the Microsoft KB article https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/978788/how-to-perform-an-in-place-upgrade-reinstallation-of-windows-xp
• Follow only the Method 2: Repair install of Windows XP by starting your computer from the Windows XP CD.
