I’ve been using unRAID Server since Beta 5 and the AD combination works just fine (other than the periodic lost permissions). But due to some circumstances today, the server lost connection with AD and keeps getting this error in syslog whenever I try to get it to join:
"Jan 5 13:42:16 Tower logger: Failed to join domain: failed to lookup DC info for domain 'XXXX-XXXX.COM' over rpc: Logon failure
Jan 5 13:42:24 Tower logger: Failed to join domain: failed to lookup DC info for domain 'XXXX-XXXX.COM' over rpc: Logon failure
Jan 5 13:42:33 Tower logger: Failed to join domain: Failed to set account flags for machine account (NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED)”
The XXXX-XXXX.com is our FQDN. I’m running unRAID beta 6 when this happened and then updated it to beta 8 without changing anything in the configurations. Any of you have ideas regarding this matter? If so, then please help me.
Syslog Error after the server lost connection in unRAID beta 6
Well, since you upgraded the unRAID beta 6 to beta 8, then the settings that you had configured in the beta 6 version might have disappeared and therefore causing the problem to occur. As a solution to that problem, you will need to do the following:
-
Figure out the configurations that you had done in the unRAID beta 6 and the do them in the latest version of that application that you have installed.
-
In case the error continues to occur, then you can just go back to using the beta 6 application. To go back you will need to use system restore, you just uninstall the beta 8 and install beta 6 again and see if that will help solve the problem.

If you are upgrading you need to revise the configuration.
Reboot the unRAID server after you select Active Directory as Share Security in the Settings page. The order is:
1. Stop the array
2. Go to 'Settings'
3. Select 'Active Directory' as 'Share Security' in the 'Identification' section
4. Click on 'Apply'
5. Go to 'Main' page and 'Reboot'
6. Go back to 'Settings'
7. Fill in 'AD domain', 'AD account login' and 'AD account password'
8. Click on 'Join' right
It is very important to note that if you are setting up unraid with Active Directory, it is essential that you perform all the configuration steps first before turning on the array. If you turn on the array before setting up Active Directory it will not function correctly due to security errors.
Then you need to create a smb-extra.conf file with the following entries
realm=FQDN and workgroup=Netbios
Put it in the path that your smb.conf has in it .You should be able to join the domain.

Now I figured what went wrong. I already changed the configuration to fit the upgraded version before turning on the array. The result was satisfactory. Thank you very much for the suggestions!
