Hello Experts!

I need help on my Mac OS X 10.5.8. I am having a timeout error when updating my software such as Firefox and Safari. I tried checking my network connection and then used an external modem to no avail. The issue is arising when updating the latest version of my software. What is happening here? How can I fix it?

Hi,

I will do my best to help you. Try a pram reset, it is like a super start. To do a PRAM reset, you need to restart your machine and hold down these 4 keys.

‘Option’, ‘Command (Cloverleaf or Apple)’, ‘R’ and 'P'. Or you can try this one open Console in Applications > Utilities, check the system log for the date time if the last shutdown for clues.

Thanks,

Hello Florence,

You can try resetting pram, it is more of a super start.

To carry on a PRAM reset, restart your machine and hold these 4 keys.
Option key, Command (Cloverleaf or Apple), R and P.
Keep them on hold until you hear 4 chimes (start-up). This is the sound which is being heard at startup.

This will reset all the system buses on your computer, USB, FireWire, display etc.
And also this will automatically correct many of the faults, but not necessarily yours.
Until the start up chime is heard, Apple Wireless Keyboards will not recognize the pressing and holding down of start up keys.

That is the usual behavior.

Again: To reset PRAM
Press the Command + Option + P + R keys and hold, while the startup chime is playing.

If the method described above doesn't seem to be working, try a Mac OS X 10.5.8 combo update.

If you are updating your web browser and you keep getting a timeout error, you are probably updating the browser using a web installer. This happens, most of the time, when the installer you downloaded is a web installer. The usual culprit is your internet connection.

You often receive timeout error when you are downloading a file and the internet connection is very slow which makes the entire download session extremely long. First, try restarting your connection. If your Wi-Fi router has a power button, press it to turn it off then unplug it from the power for about ten to twenty seconds (10 – 20).

Press any button on the router to drain any leftover power or to power cycle. After this, plug the router back to the power and turn it on. Try downloading the installer again then see if it works. If this doesn’t work, you need to download the offline installer for the browser. The following list contains the offline installers for the latest versions of the browsers:

  • Mozilla Firefox – to download the offline installer, click the “Advanced install options & other platforms” link then select your version on the next page.
  • Google Chrome
  • Opera browser – to get the standalone installer, click the “Download the offline package” link below the “Download” button.
