I have a Canon XH-A1 and FCP 6. It was working very well before until today, I cannot capture HDV using my camera. FCP seems to be not recognizing any HDV camera as I already tried to use another camera and connect it but it also failed. I searched for some solutions and a site suggested to play and pause before I capture but it still didn't work. Final Cut seems to ba having an issue. IMovie connects with no problem. I checked everything and my camera is showing on the Firewire Bus. But when I log and then capture, this error appears.
Unable to Initialize Capture Device
Device is not connected or the capture preset is not setup cprrectly. You may still log offline clips.
This might also happen if you play DV footage in an HDV device.
Unable to Initialize Capture Device
If you already tried other cameras and you are still not successful, try reinstalling Final Cut Pro. Uninstalling and reinstalling a program sometimes helps especially if the application is already installed on your computer for a very long time. Files can get corrupted even if the program and the computer are used the right way.
There is really no telling when a program or a file gets corrupted like when you open a file, its working and you close it and then later you open it again and it’s already broken. Uninstall Final Cut Pro, restart your computer, and install it back. Start Final Cut Pro, connect your camera to your computer, and check if the application can discover it.
Try also updating your operating system since updating Mac OS X also helps when a program starts to become buggy. To update, click on the Apple menu and select System Update. On the next screen, install the available update and restart your computer. In case you are prompted in between tasks, just enter your administrator username and password to continue.
