Hi,
When I am trying to perform a backup operation in Exchange, I’m getting an error message telling “Unable to open the item \MailG:ExhsrverMDBDATA23e.str-skipped.” It seems to be attempting to create a flat file backup (exchange database).
Can anyone give me any suggestions on how to resolve this issue?
Unable to open the item MailG:ExhsrverMDBDATA23e.str-skipped
Hello Christine,
Use the following procedure to fix the issue that you are getting:
-
Locate Outlook.exe. This file is usually located in one of the following folders, depending on the version of Outlook that you are running:
-
After you have found you will need to right-click Outlook.exe, and then click Properties.
-
After that go to Compatibility tab, and then click to clear the Run this program in compatibility mode for check box.
-
And then Click OK.
-
You can try to start Outlook after that.
Hope this helps.
Regards,
Carl

Firstly you should confirm about the processing to maintain exchange which is not listed for running at the time of back up.
Know about Exchange server 2003 and 2000 maintence
if Windows NT recovery file is routine to recover an exchange description & recover Exec, recovered exchange will not recover all correspondence through exchange & finally become the file corrupted .
New input alike the below will display , if system of any file is from server is choose for back up
Unworthy to execute the file \MailG:ExhsrverMDBDATA23e.str-skipped
here -ignored recoverd file shows that NTrecovery Exechange in continuing effective recovery. For resolution this kind of problems with the Exchange recovery which is not completing , you have to be sure about NT recovery file is not recoverd Exchange during that time exchange recover work is continuous.
IF the backup is running to failure even with windows NT backup, run an exchange Utility like ESEUtil to successfully resolve the problem and open a support case with Microsoft if Necessary.
