Hello,

I am working in an organization as Assistant Network Administrator. Here a Cisco 2950 with fiber Gbic module Switch has gown down and it need to be replaced with a Cisco 2960 Switch which has fiber SFP module.

As I do not have experience to work with SFP module before, my question is can I uplink Cisco 2960 with SFP port to existing another Cisco 2950 with Gbic port by fiber cable ? Is there any capability issue between Gbic to SFP ports ?

Please answer.

Hi,

Putting in Gbic into SFP port should not be of any issue since the fiber that connects it has the same wavelength. However, you will use a MM fiber end to end and the same fiber size (in microns) and also, check the optic fiber if it has the parameter SC-LC (Duplex). Remember, a fiber connection will then have no discrepancy in its performance if and only if the wavelengths do match up.

Hi Lytton,

I see that you decided to use an SFP module switch. You don't have to worry about the capability issues between GBIC ports to SFP ports as long as you use a LC to SC patch cord and these following fiber cable:

1. MM Fiber cable if you are using 2960 GLC-SX-MM.

2. Single Mode Fiber if you are using 2960 GLC-LH-SM.
