Urgent Software needed for movies

Hello! Is there any program which can convert all my MKV movie files to a format which I can burn on a disk like the AVI format or the MP4 format. I tried to use a few programs but that ended up not working. I have heard that there is actually a program with a name starting like convert……something. It worked before. Anyone knows the correct program? Thanks in advance!
