First of all, a snapshot is an image of the screen that is displayed currently. The screen that is currently displayed is probably required later, and hence a snapshot is an easy and convenient way to do that.

1. Open the screen whose snapshot you want to take.
2. Ctrl and  Print Screen (Print Scrn) are pressed simultaneously to obtain the screenshot. The image thus obtained is now saved.

If you need to take a snapshot of a particular portion of a document or the screen, you can use Free Screen Capturer. Just download and install it. This application allows you to capture screenshots, animations (screenshots), full screen capture, capture selected or active window, and capture a portion of the screen. When capturing screenshot animations, you can save it to a highly-compressed WMV file which includes an option to automatically attach it to email. To capture an active window, just press SHIFT + Windows key + PrintScreen. To capture a portion of the screen, press CTRL + SHIFT + PrintScreen.
