Whenever I start my laptop, I always got a “Navigation to the webpage was cancelled”. I cannot access or open my desktop. I searched on some forums and they said this often occurs when installing IE9, but I did not install IE9. How can I fix this? I don’t have my recovery disk with me. What can I do?

Hello William,

The following procedure will help you resolve that issue:

  • Click Start, and then type Internet Options in the Start Search box, and then click Internet Options in the Programs list.
  • After that click the Security tab, and then click Trusted Sites in the Select a zone to view or change security settings area.
  • You will then  need to click to clear the Enabled Protected Mode check box, and then click OK.
  • After that restart Internet Explorer.

Regards,

Carl

If you keep receiving that message after logging in to your computer, try scanning it for virus infection. If a computer is infected with a virus, system performance is affected. You usually get longer boot time, longer application launch, high CPU usage though no program is running, and so on. If you think your computer is infected, update your antivirus then perform a full system scan.

You can also use a virus removal tool like Sophos. Download Sophos Virus Removal Tool and install. Once installed, start Sophos then wait for the virus signature database to get updated. When updating is complete, click to start scanning your computer. Sophos scans everything on your computer including devices connected via USB port.

When a virus is found at the end of the scan, remove it then repeat the scan over and over until it no longer detects a virus. Don’t disable your antivirus when using the tool. Sophos works alongside any antivirus program you may have. Note: this is not an antivirus so don’t use it as replacement to your antivirus.

It is just a tool to remove hard-to-detect viruses. It doesn’t have real-time protection like what antivirus programs provide. If you think the problem is with Windows Internet Explorer, try updating to the latest Service Pack. Installing the latest Service Pack also updates Windows Internet Explorer. If you have Windows XP, you need to update to Service Pack 3.

Download Windows XP Service Pack 3. This is the latest and last Service Pack update for Microsoft Windows XP. If you encountered an error when updating to Service Pack 3, try updating to Service Pack 2. Download Windows XP Service Pack 2 if you don’t have it yet. You can update to Service Pack 3 once Service Pack 2 is installed.

For Windows Vista, download Windows Vista Service Pack 2. This is the latest and last Service Pack update for Microsoft Windows Vista. For Windows 7, download Windows 7 Service Pack 1. This is the latest and only Service Pack update for Microsoft Windows 7. For Windows 8, update to Windows 8.1 from the Microsoft Store.
