What is the 1394 net adapter used for? Is it a Fire Wire? Is it similar to USB devices that allow you to connect external devices to your computer using a Fire Wire cable?

Yes, 1394 net adapter is also known as Fire wire in IEEE standards. You are also right that it will allow you to connect external devices such as camcorders and digital cameras to your computer. It can also be used to connect two computers together and create a network as long as they are both equipped with Fire wire systems. It is tested to have much faster transfer speeds up to 50 Mbps. However, networking using Fire wire can be limited due to its 15 ft cable length limitation.

What is the 1394 net adapter used for?

I think you already have an idea of what it is, but I will add that, 1394 better known as Fire wire is primarily used to connect devices such as digital cameras, camcorders and external hard drives. It also allows you to connect networked computer systems with Fire Wire ports and reaches speeds of 12.5 to 50 Mbps when transiting, its only downside is its 15ft cable length limit which in turn also limits networking.
