What is an active Directory?
This is a directory service created for Windows domain networks. This service will control every aspect of the authorization and authentication of users and computers in those Windows domain networks. Besides that, this will also enforce security policies, installing and updating processes for software among the network.

Known as Lightweight Directory Access Protocol => this is an Internet protocol that other programs will use it in order to get some information about some servers.
