What is the best software Media Player for htpc to record video?

 In general the HTPC software is expected to do the following:

• Live HD Television
• Record Television
• View photos
• View videos
• Watch movies (Blu-ray, DVD, downloaded, etc)
• Listen to Music

Other thing when discussing about HTPC is that how are you using it:

• Connecting a laptop to TV 
• Using remote control

I m assuming you use a remote control for navigation.

There are various operating system based HTPC software's. Major operating systems are:

• Microsoft Windows XP, Windows 7
• Apple MAC OS X
• Linux

So I would give you options based on the OS:

Windows XP ,Windows 7:

• Windows Media Center – Free for specific version of windows
• Sage TV – As old as Media center, but the music player is very basic. Not a freeware
• XBMC – Xbox Media Center – Open source – No official support available
• Media Portal – By far the best freeware with all the advanced options and recording options.

Apple MAC OS X:

• Plex
• Apple TV
• Boxee – No live TV support

Linux:

• MythTV
• GeeXBox
