What is the BGP protocol and who uses it?

The Border gateway protocol is an interautonomous system used by Cisco. What is it used for? How is it different from the Interior Gateway protocol used by customer networks? What is an external BGP? How is it different for an interior BGP?How does BGP employ scalability to meet the demands of ISPs?

What is the BGP protocol and who uses it?

The Border Gateway Protocol(BGP) is protocol that is used to exchange the data and information between different gateways hosts in an autonomous system network. It is also known as Exterior Gateway Protocol (EGP).

Exterior Gateway Protocol (EGP) is different from Interior Gateway Protocol (IGP) in such a manner that it is used different network path in Autonomous systems whether IGP use the network path within an Autonomous systems.

BGP is mainly used to directing the traffic.
