A Web site, Website or WWW site (often shortened to just site) is a collection of Web pages, that is, HTML/XHTML documents accessible generally via HTTP on the Internet. All publicly accessible Web sites in existence comprise the World Wide Web. The pages of a Web site will be accessed from a common root URL, the homepage and usually reside on the same physical server.
In software engineering, a Web Application is an application delivered to users from a web server over a network such as the internet or an intranet. Web applications are popular due to the ubiquity of the web browser as a client, sometimes called a thin client. The ability to update and maintain web applications without distributing and installing software on potentially thousands of client computers is a key reason for their popularity. Web applications are used to implement web mail, online retail sales, online auctions, discussion boards and perform many other functions.
