It was new features of iOS 6. Some companies like Target, American Airlines, Walgreens, have gotten on the board with Passbook and it's beginning to take off. Just last week, for example, Starbucks added iOS 6 support to its app so customers can combine their Starbucks card with the Passbook.

IPhone 5 is NFC-free , Passbook functions like a sort of currency by storing tickets, coupons, gift and loyalty cards within wallet-like interface for iPhones. Item in the Passbook is integrated with apps and sites, so the transactions that take place within, they result in "Add to Passbook" option which imparts information. That information is then translated to scanned card or ticket, in the app. IOS 6 is location-aware, so some Passbook card, coupons shows up, when a user is nearby an event or store.

If you are referring to the “Apple Passbook”, it is now called “Apple Wallet”. It is an app included in the iOS operating system that allows users to save or store “Wallet-passes”: student ID cards, coupons, boarding passes, public transportation tickets, event tickets, movie tickets, and store cards.

Beginning with iOS 8.1, it will also allow you to store prepaid cards, credit cards, debit cards, and loyalty cards via Apple Pay. The Apple Passbook or Apple Wallet was designed by Apple Inc. which they presented at the 2012 Apple Worldwide Developers Conference or WWDC on June 11, 2012. It first appeared on September 19, 2012 on iOS 6.

It will also be the main interface with Apple Card, Apple’s newly announced credit card service. For ways to use it, go to How to use Wallet.
