What is Sharepoint development from a developers point of view?

I hear a lot about SharePoint these days, but I'm having trouble understanding exactly what it is all business and marketing jargon. Try Hands-on too much effort seems well (several heavy software you download not only free). Could someone have a good developer to the description of the SharePoint developer is that I would know what to do especially SharePoint developers in general ?

• Share point is the best plat form for developer because the learn something and develop a new thing.
• In Microsoft SharePoint people interact with each other.
• They share ideas and work together.
• They find resources for development, documentation, code samples, videos, training and app for SharePoint.
