MS Office 2007 Compatibility Pack is like the add-in, it is useful for MS Office 2003 (Word, Excel, etc, may be work on lower version-Office2010 / Office97, I've never tested yet) to open any office files created in Office 2007, may be above version (v2010, I've never tested yet either).

MS-office 2007 compatibility pack help you if you save office files from office 2007 or 2010 and need to open it in office 2003 and for XML format program will not help in this format file, you can confirm it by look on the new programs in start menu
