What’s next for Windows Operating System?
Hi PParker,
The next Windows version is Windows 8 which was announced during the 2011 Consumer Electronics show in Las Vegas. It is currently on Milestone 3 development which is done under close secure watch by the company to prevent builds from leaking although it has not been successful in doing so.
Milestone 1 (Build 7850, Sept. 22, 2010) sported the following features:
Windows Explorer – a new ribbon interface
Modern Reader – a built in PDF reader
Modern Task Manager – a new task manager
And finally, ISO Mounting support.
Milestone 2 (Build 7955, Feb. 28, 2011) – this build sported the following features below although a new bug appeared for the first time which was aptly named the “Black Screen of Death” (As opposed to the old Blue Screen of Death).
Application folder now fully working, since Build 7850 had a non-functioning app folder.
Cloud Support
Improve user interfaces
Virtualization and Network upgrades
Desktop Windows Manager hide blur capability
Nice login GUI design
Improvements to the operating system core
Milestone 3 (Build 7971, March 29, 2011) further added improvements with the following features:
The Windows Basic theme no longer exists, being replaced with a new one.
A fresh new welcome screen
Introduction of the Windows App Store, following on the heels of Mac and Linux
A version of Internet Explorer that closely resembles the mobile version but uses a desktop rendering engine called the “Trident”.
As of this writing, several builds have been circulating, and it seems that a lot of features have yet to be built, although some employees claim that code for the leaked builds need to be activated for it to work. It was also mentioned that the feature hybrid boot will enable users to have faster startup and shutdown times using advanced hibernation techniques previously unseen.
The final release is slated to be released mid 2012 at the earliest, and 2013 at the most.
