Sharonfaviles,

Hello,

SMC means 'Standard Management Controller' which serves several low-level on the Intel based Macs. When power button is pressed, SMC is the one which responds. When the laptop lid is closed or opened, also SMC is the one that responds.

The issue you are facing might be due to Mac power adapter or battery. Even though the Mac prompts for SMC reset, do not reset without doing the basic troubleshooting. Follow the below steps for basic troubleshooting:

  • The power adopter and the power socket should be unplugged for several minutes.
  • Mac should shut down. And the battery should be physically removed and re-inserted. Now Mac should be started.

If the above steps do not solve the issue, then SMC reset needs to be done.

SMC resetting process is different for laptops with removable batteries, non-removable batteries, and desktops.

In case of laptops with removable battery, follow the below steps:

  • Mac should be shut down.
  • Power adopter should be disconnected.
  • The power button should be pressed and hold for 5 seconds and then released.
  • The battery and the power adopter should be reconnected.
  • Computer should be turned on now by pressing the power button.

In case of laptops with non-removable batteries, follow the below steps:

  • Mac should be shutdown.
  • The power adopter should be plugged in to the power source and connected to Mac.
  • On the keyboard, shift+control+Option keys and the power button should be pressed at the same time and hold for few seconds and then released.
  • Now Mac should be turned on by pressing the power button.

In case of desktops, follow the below steps:

  • Computer should be shut down.
  • Power cord should be unplugged.
  • The power button should be pressed and hold for few seconds and then released.
  • Power cable should be attached to computer.
  • Turn on the computer by pressing the power button.

This will definitely solve the issue.
