My windows 7 machine was running perfectly the other night. I was watching a movie with my headphones. The problem started the following day. Now if I try to listen to anything on the computer, I must have my headset plugged in or I get no sound. Everything show's its' working correctly in device manager and I even tried going back to the last known restore point. Still no go. I'm scratching my head here folks. Hopefully, you guys won't have to scratch your heads nearly as hard.
Windows 7 no sound unless I use a headset?
The problem with your machine maybe the sound card. Try to install the high definition audio driver, click on device manager and look for a high definition audio.
If there is high definition audio, maybe the problem is your speaker.
Please check all the cables if they are all plugged in the correct locations, which includes speakers and headset, HDMI cables and USB devices.
To check your sound card follow these steps:
Click start button then control panel, click system and security, and then under system, and device manager.
Double click Sound, Video and game controllers to expand the category. If a sound is listed, you have one installed. If there is no sound card listed, check the information that came with your computer to see if there's supposed  to be a card installed.
If you're not still unable to get sound, just buy speakers with a jack that is likely with your headset 🙂

Hi Lyndesign
Try to test first if your headset is still working. Connect it to other music device like cell phone or ipod. After testing and check that the head seat working properly, it means that your soundcard is broken. If you’re sound hardware is built in to the motherboard, try to install new soundcard. If not, replace the soundcard with new one.

If you can still hear music when using your headset, the problem is not with the computer but maybe with the speakers. Try to connect the speakers to another computer and see if the sound works. Also, check that the cables are not broken or damaged and see if they are properly connected to the computer. Check the volume control by clicking on the icon on the system tray and ensure that the speakers are not muted. If they are, slide the volume level up, and see if you can hear any sound. You can also update your sound drivers in the Device Manager. Click the Driver tab and then Update Driver.
Thanks.
