Windows 7 problem : Screen hangs after 5 minutes being idle

Hi there!

I am having trouble with my computer and I am hoping you will be able to help me. I am running Windows 7 and the problem is, after five minutes of being idle, it would suddenly hang.

I tried disabling all the power-saving settings, ran the computer in standby mode, hibernated it, and I even tinkered with the task scheduler, but none of these efforts worked. Whenever my computer would be idle for a while, it would freeze but it would eventually work again after five minutes.

I already tried looking for answers in Google but none of my attempts worked.

I hope that you can help me figure this out.

Thank you in advance!

Hi Janna,

A pleasant day to you. I suggest you to turn on your computer firewall and make sure that your anti-virus is active.

Then restart your computer.

If that doesn't work, you can just follow the instructions on the link below:

I hope it might help you solve your issue.

When did this problem start?

It's possible that the files and configurations handling power management were corrupted hence when the computer is idle and goes into standby or hibernation, it doesn't properly execute the tasks and the computer hangs. If the computer was able to work fine before, you can just do System Restore.

Go to Start then search for System Restore. Click on the result that says that name and it will open the System Restore program. Pick a date when the computer was working fine then restore to that. Afterwards, observe if it's still doing the same thing. If it is, try running a virus scan on your system or a malware scan. The freezing problem may also be caused by these things.

If these fail, backup your files as you may ultimately need to reinstall your operating system.
