Hi Jason,

This is frequently happened when the 3rd party tools installed on your pc related to deframent and uninstall.
Did you try to uninstalled your softwares like Diskeeper,Defraggler, Mydefrag or Speedefrag. Does you have any software related to this?

It seems you forgot to removed them long ago and forget it.

Solution:

Re-register your defragmenter snap in files and also your basic registry entries.
Open the Cmd on the run menu on your start
Register the your defrag components
    regsvr32 dfrgsnap.dll
    regsvr32 dfrgui.dll
This 2 should be the main dll's.
Go to your windowsinf folder in the Windows Explorer.
Click this file dfrg.inf right

Best Regards.

Please check on the following workarounds:

1. Check if your drive has errors. Open your Command Prompt by clicking Start>Run and then type cmd.exe. Right-click it and then click Run as administrator. Type chkdsk /r and the type Y to confirm if you want to run chkdsk the next time your computer restarted.

2. You have made recent changes to your computer. If this is the case, try to restore your computer to the previous point. Click Start>All Programs>Accessories>System tools>Syatem Restore and then choose the most recent restore point.

3. Check the page file. Under your Control Panel>System>Advanced tab, hit Settings under Performance. Click the Advanced tab once again and locate for the Change button on Virtual Memory. If there is no paging file selected, try to de-select it.

4. Try to defrag on Safe Mode. Restart your computer and continuously tap F8 while booting and then select Safe Mode to start your Windows on Safe Mode.

5. Ensure that you have enough space to run the defragmenter. Go to My Computer and then right-click it and select Properties.

6. Scan your computer for Malwares.

7. Disconnect any recently added hardware.

8. Download a diagnostic software depending on the brand of your hard drive.

9. Update your Windows.

10. The defragmenter snap-in files are accidentally de-registered due to the recent installation or uninstallation of any third party defragmenter program. Run your Command Prompt and then type cd windowssystem32. Followed by regsvr32 dfrgsnap.dll and regsvr32 dfrgui.dll so it will be re-register again.

Try using the System File Checker utility. If you have Microsoft Windows XP, press the Windows key + R to bring up the “Run” dialog then type without quotes “cmd” then hit Enter. In the command prompt window, type without quotes “sfc /scannow” then hit Enter. When you are prompted to insert the setup CD, insert your Windows XP setup CD on your optical drive then continue.

Wait until the process is complete. When it is finished, close the command prompt then restart the computer. Try running the Disk Defragmenter again then see if it works. If the problem continues, you may have to reinstall the Microsoft Windows XP operating system to fix the problem.
