Windows XP installation process always hangs on “Preparing Installation” page.
Looks like you already installed the OS Windows 95. Most of the time this kind of problem occur when someone have already installed Windows 95 because Windows 95 has limited support, over the number of pages that can be opened in a installation Wizard. Now the solution is, exit from the installation process.
Start your computer normally and then install any version of Internet explorer, then after completing the installation, run the windows setup again. Download the latest Internet Explorer from this site: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/17621/internet-explorer-downloads. I think you can recover from the problem by this there is a big secret about this. So try it.

It is possible that you're using a bad Windows XP installation disc. Try using a different one or request for one from your computer's manufacturer. If after using a known working installation disc and you're still having problems, try running a hard drive test. Most branded computers would come with a diagnostics boot option to test the hardware. It's possible that you have a hard drive with bad sectors or your hard drive is failing. It is also possible that your memory is faulty and the files necessary for installation could not be loaded unto it which would freeze the installation process.

Hi Ripon,
The problem here could be that your set up is corrupt or the installation CD has been tampered and therefore it has scratches that are preventing the DVD-ROM from correctly reading the data from the disk. I will advice that you clean up the disk off any dust and the DVDROM too and try installing again.
You can also give it a little more time and see if it can move to the next stage because sometimes the process takes quite longer. Or just restart the computer to shut down whichever applications that may be running and they are taking a lot of memory hence slowing down the computer.

If you have a previous operating system like Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows Millennium and you are installing a new operating system, before installing Windows XP, make sure your computer meets the requirements. To install Microsoft Windows XP, you need to have at least 233 MHz Intel Pentium processor, 64 MB RAM, 1.5 GB free space, optical drive, sound card, and video card.
I also have Microsoft Windows XP on my computer and I’ve reinstalled it on my machine countless times but I never encountered that problem with the “preparing installation” page. There should be no problem even if your hard drive already contains an operating system and you run the Windows XP installation because setup can delete the partition where the current operating system is installed.
There should be no conflict if you install Windows XP over an existing operating system. If your installation always gets stuck in the “preparing installation” page, I think the problem is with your installation media. Try using a different Windows XP setup CD or download a Windows XP ISO and burn it on a blank CD.
Try downloading Windows XP Service Pack 3 ISO and burn it on a blank CD. After this, use it to install Windows XP on your computer.
