Would like to know how to partition my hard drive
Hello Jackie,
To partition your computer, you will have to do that from the disk management tool, Use the following procedure:
-
On the computer click on start and then type computer management in the search field,
-
Press enter on the keyboard to open it. In the window that will come up look for disk management and click on it.
-
You will see the partition of the computer that is existing.
-
Right click on it and then choose shrink volume.
-
Click OK.
-
Give the new partition a name, drive letter and the format it.
You will have successfully created a new partition from the old one.
Hope this helps.

If you are still in the process of setting up your computer, you can partition your hard drive by using the operating system installation disc. While going through the installation process it will ask you where to install the operating system, this is where you create New partitions. You can set how many partitions you want and how much space each partition will take. After that pick the partition you'd like to install your operating system into and as soon as you boot into your operating system, you'll have a few drive letters ready. Just set the volume labels so that you'll know which partition contains what files.

Hi Jackie James,
Â
Creating more partitions is easy but you can only do this if the hard disk of your PC or laptop contains unallocated spaces. Usually what manufacturers do is they allocate specific spaces for documents, downloads and etc. The unallocated ones are unformatted space that you can partition into volumes. To give way to new partitions, you can shrink or decrease the space of the other volumes. You can even use a third-party partitioning tool like partition magic.Â
Â
Here are the steps on how to partition your hard drive. First, you need to open Computer Management. You can do this in two ways. One way is by clicking on the Start button and choosing Control Panel. On this window, choose System and Maintenance and then Administrative Tools. After this, double click on Computer Management to open it. Another way of opening Computer Management is by finding the My Computer icon on your desktop. Right click on this icon and choose Manage. On the navigation pane of the Manage window, click on Disk Management under the Storage tab. Right click on the volume you want to shrink and then choose Shrink Volume.Â
Â
After shrinking the volume, you can now create new ones. To create this, you can do it through the Windows interface. In Disk Management, right click on the unallocated space where you want to create the volumes and then choose New Simple Volume. It will open the New Volume Wizard. Click on Next to this window, then click Simple and simply follow the instructions given. Allocate the size of the disk according to what you want and give it a drive letter. Repeat these steps for other volumes you want to create. Rename the volumes you created to properly identify the type of files you will save in it, whether it is for pictures, videos, music, documents and many others.

Hi Jackie,
What I'd suggest is for you to try partition software program like Minitool partition Wizard. Â You can get this for free in their website (https://www.partitionwizard.com/). This is a windows based program so it's easy to use. Â It supports all hard disks type and works on 32 and 64 bits operating system including Windows XP, Vista, Windows Server 2000/2003/2008, Windows SBS and Windows 7.
With Minitool partition Wizard you can perform partition operations safely and quickly, you can create, delete and format your partition. You can also change your partition size without data loss or reinstallation which is great in case you need to adjust the size you allocated for your files like your music, pictures and documents.
I have used this for years and works perfectly.
