Basic Information Tips for Internet Protocol Version 6
Introduction to IPv6
IP (Internet Protocol) is responsible for transmitting datagrams across the network. It performs routing functions and operates at network layer of TCPIP model. The first Implementation of IP is called IPV4 simply called Internet Protocol version 4. It has been in use for some years however due to the explosion of internet, serious challenges have emerged.
This is mainly due to running out of Internet addresses and inability to provide functionality needed for other devices e.g mobile telephones. Therefore Internet Engineering Task force (IETF) came up an improved version to address these challenges. This new version is called IPV6, an improvement of IPv4.
Features of IPV6
- Utilizes 128 bits for its addresses hence big address space than IPV4(It uses 32 bits)
- The new IPV6 Header Format overheads has been reduced to a minimum
- Implements stateful address configuration and stateless address configuration
- Improved IP datagram efficiency
- Machines will be able to automatically configure themselves whenever they are plugged in IPv6 Network.
- It will implement Ipsec as in-built security requirement.
- There is no need for triangular routing as it was in Mobile IPv4
